Brewer and Alicea Advance Charlton Bill

BOSTON – Senator Stephen M. Brewer (D-Barre) and Representative Geraldo Alicea (D-Charlton) announced today that the Senate enacted their bill that would transfer ownership of the Prindle Lake Dam to the Town of Charlton.

Senator Brewer and Representative Alicea filed as a joint petition Senate Bill 2108, “An Act to Authorize the Town of Charlton to Acquire Dams within the Town, to Make Improvements to Dams and to Authorize the Assessment of Betterments to Pay Costs of the Same.” The Town of Charlton voted on May 18, 2009 at their Annual Town Meeting to allow them to acquire the Prindle Lake Dam in order to make much needed repairs. One of the options seriously considered by the current owners is to breach the dam. The destruction of the Prindle Lake Dam would not preserve the river or brook upstream. The lake is approximately 80 acres and is fed by runoff from surrounding hills and by natural springs by the lake. There have been many concerns expressed by the Prindle lake front property owners relative to the destruction of the dam. If the dam were to be breached, the lake would turn into a swamp and eliminate the cedar trees that have existed over 100 years ago.

“I am thrilled to see the timely passage of this bill and I applaud my House colleagues in doing the same,” said Senator Brewer. “I have worked diligently with the Town of Charlton and the lakefront property owners to find a resolution and I believe this legislation will mollify everyone’s concerns and preserve this beautiful resource.”

"I am glad that we were able to push this legislation through in a timely manner in order to prevent the breaching of the dam" said Representative Alicea. "Prindle Lake is such a vital resource for our community, and I applaud the Town for its efforts in protecting this valuable landmark."

S.2108 has been laid on the Governor’s desk for his approbation.
